Explained: Fulgent Genetics & Picture Genetics

July 1, 2021 | Why Picture
You’ll notice the name “Fulgent Genetics” in our logo, on our website, and various other places around here.

What’s Fulgent Genetics got to do with Picture Genetics? They’re the same company, and the same laboratory, but they each provide different services.

Fulgent is our parent laboratory, and has been providing medical-quality genetic testing analysis and clinical reports for almost a decade. Fulgent’s genetic tests cover a wide range of fields and specialties—from oncology, to rare disease, to reproductive services. Our lab works with physicians around the world and across more than 700 health institutions (including Johns Hopkins, Kaiser Permanente, and Cedars-Sinai).

Fulgent’s tests, however, can’t be ordered from home. They’re usually ordered for patients on an as-needed basis, and that need is determined by a healthcare clinician. So, doctors are generally the ones ordering genetic testing through Fulgent, collecting patients’ samples, and sending them back to our lab for analysis.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this process, and Fulgent has continued to be a strong provider of clinical testing over the years. But, as genetics professionals ourselves, we realized that some tests can and should be made more readily available to the general public.

That’s why we built Picture in 2019, as a service of Fulgent Genetics. Picture specializes in at-home testing. We know from experience that genetic testing can provide valuable insight into health management and family planning decisions, and that most of the current at-home tests on the market aren’t clinical-grade. So we decided to provide genetic analysis from a clinically validated lab, complete with physician support, all from the comfort of home.

The physician support included in Picture tests is provided by independent and licensed third-party providers, but the testing and analysis is all performed by our lab at Fulgent. That means your sample will be processed using gold-standard technology, analyzed by our experienced geneticists, and signed by one of our licensed lab directors. It also means that you can take your report to your doctor and consider it a legitimate piece of your medical care process.
